Chapter 8

Jax

Paisley remained aloof and distant as we finished getting ready and made our way out to the pub in the middle of town for Christmas Karaoke. She didn't seem upset, just quiet, but I could tell that her reaction was bothering Weston. I tried to talk to her several times at the house and in the truck, but every time I did, she blew me off and started chattering about karaoke.

As we walked up to the bar, I tried one more time, knowing it was the last chance I would get for a while.

“Hey, Pais…”

She smiled and hooked her arm in mine as Weston held the door open for us. “Jax, are you going to sing? I was thinking I might, but then, I have my mama's pipes, and I think Weston is really looking forward to winning again. I don't want to blow that for him, but I'm having a hard time picturing him as a singer. Have you seen him sing?”

“Once or twice,” I answered. “And you know I can't sing. But listen, Paisley, I’ve been trying to talk to you, and you know, check in. Make sure you're okay. You've been kind of quiet since you know…”

“Since Weston pulled down my pants, bared my ass, and spanked me in the living room while you watched like it was the most normal thing on the planet?”

Her words sounded upset, and full of sass, but her voice was full of teasing and betrayed her. So did the sparkle in her eyes.

“Jax, I'm okay, I promise. I'm just not ready to talk about it yet, but when I am, I promise you'll be the first to know.”

“Okay, thank you.” I kissed her cheek and Weston approached holding two beers in bottles, and some sort of festive-looking martini thing that he handed to Paisley.

She took it with a curious expression. He shrugged. “Besides wine, which they don't carry a large selection of, I didn't know what you liked. Betty suggested this. It's tonight's special, I guess. Some sort of cranberry martini.”

She took a tentative sip and smiled at him over the rim of her glass. “It's very good, thank you, but for the record, next time I'll have what you're having.” She pointed to the beer Weston was holding.

“Interesting. I wouldn't have pegged you for a beer drinker, you being a big city girl and all.”

Paisley shrugged. “You know what they say, you can take a girl out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the girl.”

“Noted. On another subject, I can't decide what song to sing. Any requests?”

“I think you and Paisley should do a duet,” I piped up mischievously.

“Interesting.” Weston nodded, looking Paisley up and down as he considered it. “I have just one question. Can you sing? Cause no offense, but I'm going after the gold tonight.”

“No offense, but if I sing alone, I plan to give you a run for your money.”

“So, you can sing?”

“Let's just say I've got my mama's pipes.”

“A duet it is.
